The Pune rural police on Monday arrested a gardener in connection with the murder of PCMC engineers wife Sheetal Ovhal,35. The suspect has been identified as Laxman Prabhu Wagh,25,of Akurdi. Police said theft was the motive behind murder.
Sheetal,a resident of Kaleshwari Housing Society in sector 26 of Nigdi Pradhikaran,was brutally murdered on August 26 when her husband was away and two persons visited her house on the fateful day.
Police said the duo told Sheetal they are gardeners and her husband had asked them to do some work in their bungalow. While Sheetal was calling her husband for verifying it,they attacked her with sharp weapons. She fell unconscious due to the injuries.
Meanwhile,her husband called her back repeatedly but there was no reponse. He called up his neighbours to check if something was wrong. The neighbours were shocked to see Sheetal in a pool of blood,police said.
Soon,her husband and a team of Nigdi police rushed to the spot and took Sheetal to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Police said there were 17 injury marks on her head. A murder case was registered at Dehu Road police station in the case.
Acting on a tip-off,police zeroed-in on Wagh,who worked in sector 26 area,where the murder had taken place. Police said Wagh had been behaving suspiciously after the murder and was planning to go to his native place in Parbhani. A team led by sub inspector Somnath Jadhav nabbed him at his house in Akurdi. During interrogation,he confessed to have committed the crime with the motive of theft, said senior inspector Ram Jadhav.
