The agitation launched by Uruli Devachi residents after a fire broke out at the garbage dumping site was suspended by them after Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) promised precautionary measures to avoid repeat of such incidents.
On Monday,the villagers protested by stopping the PMC garbage dumpers from passing through the village to the processing unit at Uruli Devachi.
Taking up the issue with the civic administration and party leaders,MP Supriya Sule sought immediate measures to tackle the situation. Listing various demands,she alongwith villagers,submitted a memorandum to Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Pathak.
We did everything possible to stop the fire,which is now under control. Around 60 water tankers were pressed into service. Two fire engine have been posted at the location permanently, said Pramod Yadav,in-charge of waste disposal at PMC. He said the other demand of giving jobs to affected villagers is under process as the proposal is pending with the state government. The civic body has recruited around 60 villager on contract, said Yadav.
He said the development work initiated by the civic body in the village is nearing completion and the water supply scheme will soon be implemented as the PMC has allotted budgetary provision for the purpose. Meanwhile,the civic body is providing water through tankers.
