FTII to issue diplomas to students who completed courses between 1995 and ’06

Prior to 1997,the last convocation was held in 1989.

When actor Dilip Kumar visited the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) for its convocation ceremony back in 1997 on December 14,it turned out to be the last at the institute as the event was marred by protests from students. Prior to 1997,the last convocation was held in 1989. Though there is still a while before another convocation takes place at the institute, the administration has announced they will issue diploma certificates to students who completed the courses between 1995 and 2006.

Speaking to Newsline,FTII Director DJ Narain said,“The decision to issue diploma certificates was taken around 10 days ago as the need was felt to clear the backlog. As of now,it is not possible for us to organise a convocation as we do not have the details of students who have completed the courses or left it mid-way. We will issue diplomas to only those students who have completed the courses.”

He said the issue of diplomas is not limited only to students of film studies but also those studying animation, television studies and script writing.

Since 1997 no diploma certificates have been issued to students. However,Narain said it did not hamper the job prospects of students as the need for such certificates was never felt.

“A lot of students get jobs by the word of mouth. They have never been asked to submit a diploma or degree to prove they have passed out from the institute. In case,a student seeks to pursue higher education abroad, the appropriate documents required for the same have been issued to them. The course completion certificates are primary requisite in such cases,” he said.

Narain said the institute is making efforts to change things. “On one hand we have been pushing for the status of institute of national importance for FTII and on the other we are having our own problems which need to be sorted out. We understand that a convocation is not mandatory but once we clear the backlog,we will realistically look at organising convocations.”

As many as 635 students from all the courses will be issued diploma certificates. Narain said they are facing the problem of getting in touch with students. “The certificates are being readied and as and when students visit the institute we will hand over the diplomas to them,” he added.
