FTII admission revamp for wider reach

To reach the interiors of the country and to ensure that more and more people from such places make it to the institute, the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) is now planning to streamline its admission process from the coming academic year.

To reach the interiors of the country and to ensure that more and more people from such places make it to the institute, the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) is now planning to streamline its admission process from the coming academic year.

“The process was not structured and there was certainly a lot of scope to improve the existing pattern as it had a lot of loose ends,” said FTII director D J Narain. The process will be structured in a three-tier pattern. The first tier will focus on advertisement announcing the exams, the second will be exams and the third will be declaration of result and selection process.

Narain said the current intake pattern shows that many students are from urban areas and as a result the institute was missing the talent from the remote parts of the country. “We currently conduct the exam at 18 centres in the country. Now,we will increase the number of centres so that more students can appear for the exams in cities near their hometowns. In fact,we hope to have a centre in every state. We will ensure that advertisements are published in all the leading dailies, including the vernacular ones,in all the states. We will take the help of our students and faculty for posting advertisements at major universities across the country,” he said. The management is also looking at the possibility of posting the advertisements on social networking sites, along with involving key social development ministries and rural development ministries.

The question papers for the entrance test will comprise four different sets to eliminate the possibility of any malpractice. “We have not had any such incident ever since the institute was established but still we will step up the security,” said FTII Registrar Prakash Magdum. At the evaluation tier,assembly-line system will be adopted for checking the papers where one examiner will check only one question in a paper and pass it to the next person to check the next question. “The entire process will be monitored by a central moderator who will not be from the institute,” Narain said. He confirmed that the number of seats for the courses will not be increased.

The candidates who will be selected for the interview will undergo a five-day interview process that will be on the lines of the Service Selection Board interviews. “It will be a five-day process of which the first three days will be a mandatory workshop conducted by the faculty members for the respective courses. During the workshop, the faculty will also be evaluating the candidates. The interviews will be held over the next two days. The new process will make the admission system more streamlined and transparent,” Narain said.
