The Rowing Channel of College of Military Engineering (CME) was buzzing with men in combat uniform as sappers from various engineering units across the country took part in the Best Sapper Competition that began on Friday.
As many as 42 sappers from 21 teams belonging to three sapper groups are taking part in the four-day competition that will put to test their fighting spirit, technical know-how and the ability to make the best use of available resources through various tasks assigned to them. The winning team will be felicitated by the Engineer-in- Chief of the Indian Army on Monday.
The competition started with a 10 kilometre run. This was followed by crossing a water obstacle in which they were given a load that they were supposed to carry across the width of the rowing channel on buoys and ropes which they could use as basic material to construct a float. The job after crossing the channel involved measuring its width with basic equipment, gradient between two flags put on the banks, grid reference and recce. Time, efficiency and the ability to make the best use of available material was put to test during this task, said a CME official.
The competition, now in its second year, will put the sappers, selected over a period of about two months by respective formations across the country, through tasks such as cross country, day and night firing, obstacle, demolition firing,point- to-point navigation during night and run back.
