Focus on visible policing, says new Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar

Speaking to the media persons, IPS officer Amitesh Kumar said economic offences, cyber crimes, woman safety are important issues that he would be looking at.

IPS officer Amitesh Kumar took charge as the new commissioner of Pune city police on Thursday. He replaced the outgoing police commissioner Retesh Kumaar

Amitesh Kumar said his focus will be on basic and visible policing. “visibility of police gives confidence to the vulnerable sections….,” he said.

Speaking to the media persons, he said economic offences, cyber crimes, woman safety are important issues that he would be looking at.

Asked about the traffic situation in Pune city, he talked about regulation, decongestion of traffic as well as evidence and camera based enforcement. “Use of helmets, seat belts and following mandatory safety norms through voluntary compliance and awareness is required,” he said.

Amitesh Kumar was previously holding the charge of Police Commissioner of Nagpur city. Retesh Kumaarr has been transferred to the appointment of Commandant General of Maharashtra Homeguard on promotion to the rank of Director General of Police.

Retesh Kumaarr who had taken over as Pune CP in December 2022, has during his tenure taken stringent actions against criminal gangs under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Acts. During his tenure MCOCA was invoked against 115 gangs and MPDA was invoked against 100 notorious criminals.

Amitesh Kumar said special acts will be used properly. “After all, which law is to be used will be decided after discussions. It is important to keep a check on the criminal elements…,” he said.
