First list out,waiting game begins

The first waiting list for junior college admissions was put up by colleges on Thursday evening.

The first waiting list for junior college admissions was put up by colleges on Thursday evening. While the earlier admission list was put up by the Centralised Admission Panel (CAP),now students will have to check individual colleges for waiting lists as per their preference choices filled up by them during the submission of forms.

Over 90 per cent seats have already been filled. Admissions have been closed to some of the major colleges that have already filled all their seats and so there will be no waiting list for them. In Fergusson, all the 240 seats for Arts have been filled but science admissions are still open. In Marathwada Mitramandal’s College of Commerce,120 bifocal seats and 100 general seats for science have been filled. For commerce, out of 600,480 seats were filled till Thursday, the rest will be filled up through the waiting list. In Wadia, science admissions are still on. For Science a total of 600 seats are available. Admissions are open for all three streams.

Deputy director of education for Pune region Sunil Magar said,“We have recieved a large numbers of queries and complaints this year on the helplines. We start the helpline services from 8am and goes on till 10pm in some of the centres. There are eight counselling centres and 16 sessions were held.”

Among the common complaints and grievances by students is the confusion over aided and unaided colleges. “While filing the preference forms, students don’t check whether a college is aided or unaided and then later they want to change when they realise the differences in fees. For aided courses, the fees for science range between Rs 2000-2500,while for unaided ones it goes up to even Rs 25,000,” said Rekha Palshikar,vice-principal,Fergusson College.

Another common complaint is that most unaided colleges refuse to refund 90 per cent of the fees if the student withdraws. As per the rules, only 10 per cent of the fees is supposed to be deducted if the student cancels the admission within a month. This is done by quite a few students as they get better colleges after the waiting lists are declared as per the preference lists.
