(Representational image)Three women were rescued to safety by the Pimpri Chinchwad fire brigade after a fire broke out at shops and a mattress manufacturing unit at the Zero Boys chowk in Nehru Nagar, Pimpri on Wednesday evening.
“The rescued women included Ashwini Bakhade (24) and Chetna Savarkar (26) and a senior citizen. They were taken to a hospital for treatment where their condition was reported to be stable,” said Rushikant Chipade of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) fire brigade.
The PCMC fire brigade control room received a call around 4.50 pm regarding fire at the shops on the ground floor of a three-storeyed building at Zero boys chowk in Nehru Nagar.
Soon, fire brigade teams rushed to the spot with fire tenders and water tankers. Fire officials said the mattress manufacturing unit and adjoining furniture shop had caught fire, causing a huge amount of smoke.
“The building had a single staircase. Smoke emanating due to the fire got accumulated in the staircase and caused suffocation, due to which a woman fainted in an apartment in the building. Also, two more women were trapped in the building. We rescued the women and sent them to a hospital for medical support,” said a fire officer.
Fire officer Gautam Ingawale said, “Prima-facie, we suspect that fire was caused due to a short circuit. About 14 water tankers were used for extinguishing the fire and then a cooling operation was initiated.”
Fire officials said that furniture, mattresses and other items were gutted in the fire. The incident had caused a panic in the area for some time. A police team was deployed at the spot to keep the situation under control.
