Marathi film Sa Sasucha, that deftly mixes mystery and family drama, premiered in Pune on Sunday
A haunted house is an unusual setting to bust some old relationship myths. Strained dynamics between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law is no novel news. But,a story which presents a more amicable picture sure is. Sa Sasucha treads that unusual storyline with some thriller mysteries thrown in for good measure. First-time director Kishore Belekar is stoked with the response the film has been garnering. It’s a simple family story. The feedback I have got has been so encouraging. Everyone can connect to the premise of the film. In fact, some self-employed women from the interiors of Maharashtra have approached me to screen the film in their areas,as it could help bring about a different aspect of family relations to light, says Belekar.
The film saw its premier in Pune on Sunday and the cast and crew are soaking in the varied, but mostly positive, feedback. Sunil Barve, the lead actor in the flick, says,It was lovely working with Kishore,as I enjoy working with young, new directors. They are very focussed and innovative in their approach. I saw different ideas come up with every shot of the film. A lot of people have been asking me how I managed to handle a snake in one of the scenes. They seem to recall that about me more than anything else!
The film revolves around the happenings in two houses, one of which is a 150-year old, derelict mansion full of snakes and inexplicable occurrences. The presence of the dead mother-in-law of the female protagonist looms over the house and is trying to send out some messages through seemingly scary symbols. Actor Sonali Kulkarni, who plays the daughter-in-law trying to make sense of the eery happenings, says,Though they are used inter-changeably,horror and mystery are two very different genres. This film is more mystery and not a ghostly caper. I must admit that the set, especially the haunted house in Alibaug, was scary and I would often have nightmares after the wrap-up! But overall,it was immense fun as I have never been a part of such a film before.
Sa Sasucha aims to redefine filming techniques and set a new example in slickness. It was a challenge handling the filming in two separate houses. But I’m proud of the end product. There are plans to release it privately in Sydney,Australia,as well. Hopefully, this is the start of better things to come, smiles Belekar.
