“The first thing that one notices about a person is his/her eyes. My figurative paintings too make an effort to speak for themselves through expressive eyes,” says artist Vishwajeet Kumar. A silent dialogue carries on between the viewer and the figures created by this Bihar-based artist. Kumar, also a photographer, was in the city for his first solo exhibition held at Art2Day Gallery till January 29.
An artist for 12 years now,Kumar’s latest collection of paintings is titled ‘Vision’. The exhibition showcased an artist’s dreams of another world through the eyes of several figures. “I relate human behaviour to nature and God. I also consider humanity as a power bestowed on us by the Almighty,” says Kumar.
The artist’s thoughts are reflected through the expressive eyes in his artworks. “My paintings visualise the thoughts which are going on in my mind. If I am happy,it’s a bright painting,” he says. Nature also plays a significant role in his paintings. “Mother Nature is full of colours. It is my constant endeavour to rediscover the beauty of nature and represent that in my works,” he adds.
Kumar’s other passion – photography – aids his love for painting. “It is not possible to immediately paint something that one finds inspiring. Thus,I carry my camera and capture what strikes my eyes and only later do I get down to interpreting it on canvas. This method has actually helped me improve my photography skills as well,” he says.
Kumar’s journeys to Maharashtra have found place in his artworks. He has painted Shirdi Sai Baba’s portrait. Even his rendezvous with a dhol tasha team has been beautifully represented through colours and his touch of creativity. This was his first visit to the city. “I came here with the aim of interacting with city-based artists to learn more about the culture and tradition of Pune. This city is so rich – from the culture to the language; I have a lot to learn here,” he says.
