Tension prevails in Dattawadi area after the son of a former corporator was on Tuesday morning murdered inside a public toilet at Rajiv Gandhi Vasahat,Parvati Paytha. The murder of Ganesh Bhagwat Kamble (32) led to violent protests, with people pelting stones at vehicles and setting ablaze an office of one of the alleged assailants.
A strong police force was deployed to bring the situation under control. Police suspect Ganesh, whose mother Laxmibai was a corporator of the Pune Municipal Corporation from 1992 to 1997,was murdered because of an earlier rivalry.
As news of the murder spread, supporters of Ganesh went on a rampage and set ablaze the office of Ram Jagdale, one of the alleged assailants. Ganeshs brother Mahesh Kamble (38) has lodged a complaint with Dattawadi police against Ram Jagdale, his brother Laxman Jagdale,Amol Kale,Shankar Bhalerao,Bhimya Jadhav and Mukund Gaikwad, all residents of Dattawadi area.
Mahesh later told mediapersons that he saw five to six persons taking him to the first floor of the public toilet. He rushed to his brothers aid,but they killed Ganesh and escaped before he could reach the spot.
Ganesh, who got severe head injuries, was rushed to a hospital and was declared dead on arrival. His supporters set Jagdales office on fire and damaged some vehicles, leading to tension in the area for a few hours. Police teams are now looking for the suspects.
Police said there was a dispute between Ganesh and the Jagdale brothers. Two years ago,the PMC had demolished some houses in the area (survey number 132) and had given the residents flats at Laxmi Narayan Towers on Sinhagad Road. Ganesh had suspected that the Jagdale brothers constructed an office at Rajiv Gandhi Vasahat after selling some flats they illegally acquired at Laxmi Narayan Towers with the help of some PMC officials. This allegation had triggered a rivalry between Ganesh, who was planning to contest the PMC elections in 2011,and the Jagdale brothers.
Senior police inspector Uttam More of Dattawadi police station said a war of supremacy had been raging between Ganesh and the Jagdale brothers since then. They had a recent brawl during Dr Ambedkars birth anniversary celebrations.
Police said Ganeshs father Bhagwat Kamble was also murdered in 1995 over a petty dispute, when Ganeshs mother was a corporator. Ganesh is survived by his mother, brother, wife and son.
