Everybody’s confident in every seat

On the eve of the counting day,all political parties sounded confident of their victory in the four Lok Sabha constituencies of the district-Pune,Baramati,Maval and Shirur.

On the eve of the counting day,all political parties sounded confident of their victory in the four Lok Sabha constituencies of the district-Pune,Baramati,Maval and Shirur.

While the Congress,NCP,Shiv Sena,BJP and even Independent Arun Bhatia expressed confidence of their win,the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) said it did not want to be overconfident, but added it will put up a good fight. The low voter turnout-45 per cent in district and 40 per cent in city-has not dampened their spirits.

City Congress spokesperson Satish Desai said party candidate Suresh Kalmadi will win the Pune seat. He said the party will lead in all Assembly constituencies, except Kasba and Kothrud, giving Kalmadi a winning margin of nearly 40,000 votes. “The Congress will do well in Cantonment and Wadgaonsheri Assembly constituencies,” he added.

NCP city chief Jaidev Gaikwad said Supriya Sule will win in Baramati with a margin of over 6 lakh votes, much more than her father’s record margin of four lakh votes. Predicting a close fight in Shirur,Gaikwad said the NCP will win comfortably in Maval also if the caste factor does not come in the way.

BJP candidate in Pune Anil Shirole is also confident of his win. “Except Cantonment and Wadgaonsheri,we will lead in all Assembly segments,” he said.

The BSP is also sure of winning the seat and is banking on the large number of OBC,Dalit and Brahmin votes. “We have been working for the past four years among these communities,” said Kiran Alhat, state general secretary. “Our candidate D S Kulkarni has a better image than others and nearly 40,000 voters in Pune have considered the image of the candidate,” he said.

The Sena claimed to win both Maval and Shirur seats. Sena spokesperson Arvind Sawant said these two seats had strong party candidates.

MNS member Kishore Shinde said though they were confident of their candidate, they did not want to be overconfident. “We will put up a tough fight in these elections,” he said.

MNS candidate Ranjit Shirole said the feedback was positive, but he had a long way to go.
