Twenty students of SICSR were chosen to work for the promotion of an event called Vastrasamman which is a part of the nationwide campaign Joy Of Giving Week – initiated by Goonj
As the whole nation celebrates Joy Of Giving Week, which started on September 27 and ends on October 3,20 city students pitched in by working as a volunteers in campaigning for the cause. The nationwide campaign by Goonj,an NGO,is currently going on in 25 cities of India. The collection centre chosen by Goonj in Pune was Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research (SICSR),Model Colony.
The college,SICSR has got a committee called Sharing Care, which works for various social causes. And these 20 students, who are members of Sharing Care, have been chosen to work in association with the members of Goonj for an event called Vastrasamman under which clothes will be collected at the collection centre ie SICSR. The three-day event,Vastrasamman will start from October 1 and will end on October 3. Pursuing second year of MBA (IT) from SICSR,Partho Mitra, one of the volunteer, says,The role played by us in this campaign was to create awareness about the event through different mediums. We started our work from September 24.
Another volunteer Shradhha Nikumbh, who is also in her second year of MBA (IT),says,The members of Goonj guided us a lot with minute details and steps for campaigning. We will try our best to make Vastrasamman a success. Along with the brochures and pamphlets, the volunteers have also been provided laptops for recording the details of the event and the collections. For promoting the event, besides visiting schools, colleges, institutes and corporates, the volunteers have also spread the word on networking sites and blogs and have received great response.
Before choosing these students and assigning them the task to work for Goonj, these volunteers were thoroughly interviewed by the Sharing Care Committee on their line of interest in social cause.
Amongst the 20 students, while some are freshers, others are experienced who have worked for other social causes in the past. We are extremely proud to be associated with Goonj and will look forward to work with them in the future also, said co-ordinator Gauri Dalal, who is also working as MSC (CA) programme co-ordintor at SICSR. One challenge which the volunteers faced is that although people, especially corporate companies, are willing to donate clothes but are finding it difficult to come to the collection centre. To convince them to come to the collection centre was a tough task, says Mitra.
On balancing their studies with the campaign, says Nikumbh,We all have scheduled the roles and responsibilities in such a way that studies and assignments dont get ignored.
(The collection centre at SICSR,Model Colony will be open for clothes donation from October 1 to October 3,between 9.30 am and 5 pm. Those in support for the cause can contact 9730579343)
