Hadapsar family had gone to Lohegaon air base to see aircraft landing, taking off
On December 15 when a Hadapsar farmer stopped his car near the Lohegaon air base to watch aircraft take-off and land, little did he know that the curiosity would land him in deep waters, quite literally. Accompanied by his mother and brother,31-year-old Pravin Vasant Gote from Mohammed Wadi had gone to the Lohegaon air base to watch aeroplanes. I wanted to show my mother how aeroplanes take off and land. We stopped on the road near Agarwal stone quarry from where the planes can be viewed, said Gote.
My brother and mother got down to see the planes. I was taking a reverse turn when my Tata Sierra became non-functional and moved fast on the slope towards the stone quarry, recalled Gote. I was unable to control the vehicle as the quarry was around 15 feet deep. Somehow I managed to open the door of the car and jumped out, said Gote. The car fell in the quarry that was filled with water, however,Gote swam ashore without injuries.
I was looking at the aeroplanes above and we were taking pictures on our cell phone. Suddenly we saw Pravin falling into the quarry with the four wheeler. I was numb with shock, said Gotes mother Chandrakala. The vehicle could not be taken out of the pit on Friday. We are trying to lift the vehicle from the quarry using cranes. The hooks of the cranes have been damaged and the vehicle could not be lifted till Friday evening. We will try again on Saturday, said sub officer of Yerawada fire station Maruti Pawle. We have recorded Gotes statement. People go to the spot for viewing aeroplanes. So steps would be taken to prevent such mishaps, said police sub-inspector Y S Nikam of Airport police.
