Doctors, nurses booked for negligence over 2-year-old boy’s death on warmer machine last year near Pune

The 2-year-old boy died after he suffered severe burns on his leg at a hospital in Chikhali in November last year.

The Chikhali police in the Pune district of Maharashtra on Wednesday booked three doctors and two staffers of a hospital on charges of negligence that allegedly caused the death of a two-year-old boy last year.

Following a report obtained from a board of medical experts in this case, Dipali Gdeva, 36, mother of the victim boy, lodged the FIR at the Chikhali police station. According to a press release issued by the police, Dr Jitesh Dobhal, Dr Ranjish Mishra, Dr Rohan Mali, nurses R A Dave, 26, and Savita Varvate, 39, were booked in this case under sections 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The police said the complainant’s son Diransh was undergoing treatment at Imperial Hospital in Chikhali in November last year. He was put on a warmer machine for the purpose of treatment. But due to alleged negligence, he suffered severe burns on his left leg from the warmer on November 18, 2023, and he died, the police said.

The boy’s parents filed a complaint of negligence against the doctors and the staffers. “A board of medical experts carried out an inquiry into this incident. An FIR has been registered on the basis of the findings of the inquiry. Further investigation is on,” said Senior Police Inspector Vitthal Salunkhe of the Chikhali police station.
