‘Disaster management training at schools key’

With just a few schools being addressed as far as training in disaster management is concerned.

With just a few schools being addressed as far as training in disaster management is concerned, the state government has called upon the district disaster management authority to address all the schools.

Radio jingles, readying a proper team for search and rescue operations especially in villages and even readying a team ahead of the monsoons this year are among the directives put forth by additional chief secretary relief and rehabilitation JS Saharia. He was taking a review meeting in Pune for the entire division.

After taking a detailed report on the present system of disaster management of the division he said that the authorities need to take maximum efforts to have an effective system of implementation of the disaster management system in place.

Last week, the relief and rehabilitation department had proposed that disaster management authorities should have independent status to streamline the functioning. The meeting was headed by chief secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad. However it was opposed. The idea behind independent entity with separate office and an IAS officer as its head was to ensure effective monitoring of disaster like situations.

The officers had opposed the separate entity formation to create one more authority as the existing authorities are managed as per the rules and regulations of the Disaster Management Act. It was decided in the meeting that instead of forming an authority they will strengthen the existing bodies by giving them additional facilities and arms.
