Decision on rent-a-cycle scheme put off

The Pune Municipal Corporation’s ambitious initiative of rent-a-cycle to promote the use of the environment-friendly means of transport has hit a road block as the ruling NCP along with Shiv Sena,BJP and MNS decided to postpone the decision in the general body meeting on Friday.

The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) ambitious initiative of rent-a-cycle to promote the use of the environment-friendly means of transport has hit a road block as the ruling NCP along with Shiv Sena,BJP and MNS decided to postpone the decision in the general body meeting on Friday.

The PMC standing committee recently approved the scheme to promote the use of bicycles among citizens. Under the scheme, the civic body would pay Rs 3.27 crore to the company executing the project which would begin with 300 cycles and 20 cycle stands across the city. The facility will be available for 600 registered members at an annual fee of Rs 700 or Rs 500. There will not be any rent for two hours and thereafter it will be Rs 10 per hour.

Barring Congress, corporators of all political parties raised objection over its implementation.

Shiv Sena leader Shyam Deshpande said that if rights of advertisement at the cycle stands will be given to the executing company then there was no need of giving Rs 3.27 crore for the project.

“The PMC administration should explain the amount of expenditure it has proposed to incur on the project and the advertising rights given to the private company executing the project,” said Deshpande.

MNS leader Kishore Shinde said that his party was not against the initiative but was doubtful over the way contract has been made with a private company.

Independent corporator Ujjwal Keskar sought postponement of decision on the proposal which was supported by ruling NCP along with all other opposition parties.

Congress leader Ulhas Bagul said that the scheme was to promote bicycle use among citizens since the PMC has constructed 123 km of cycle track across the city. “The cycle track are being encroached upon by hawkers and it can be stopped only if cycles are promoted in the city,” he said.
