A police probe into the recent cases of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) has shown that racketeers are using migrant labourers working in suburban areas of the city to bring the notes into circulation.
Last week,Vishrantwadi police arrested five persons from Nadia and Murshidabad districts in West Bengal and seized FICN worth Rs 1.41 lakh. Police said one of the five worked as a labour contractor, while the others were construction labourers.
In the second week of August,Chatushrungi police arrested two persons Malda district in West Bengal and seized FICN from their possession. Senior inspector Sudhakar Kate of Vishranrwadi station said,One can only find out if the notes are fake if they observe them closely or get them checked from bank authorities. It is very clear these notes are from a very deep rooted FICN racket.
Assistant inspector Mahesh Bolkotgi of Chatushrungi station said,The arrested persons are from a very poor economic background. We have come to know that the racketeers in these cases are from West Bengal and surrounding areas. Most of these labourers are also from there.
Kate said,Three of the suspects arrested in Vishrantwadi case are youths aged 19-20. They got into this for easy and fast money. They pay half the amount in genuine currency to buy it from the racketeers for example, they pay Rs 5,000 to receive FICN worth Rs 10,000. Then, they go shop for their daily requirements and disseminate the notes.
Police have not yet been able to trace the main smugglers in any of these cases.
