Almost five months after Mahendra Kawachale of Mundhwa was arrested for allegedly impersonating as a lawyer, yet another alleged fake lawyer was arrested by Shivajinagar police on Thursday, prompting the Pune Bar Association to set up a panel to look into complaints from litigants of any such lawyers trying to dupe them.

Uddhav Vinayak Kshetrapale was arrested after several lawyers practising in the Pune District and Sessions court in Shivajinagar got suspicious and handed him over to the police. According to advocate Amol Kajale-Patil,secretary of the Pune Bar Association, some lawyers saw Kshetrapale before a magistrate on Thursday. “He was not wearing the lawyers’ black coat. When asked if he was a lawyer,he replied in the affirmative, but when asked about his sanad number,he started giving evasive replies,” said Kajale-Patil.

He said Kshetrapale told them that he had forgotten his sanad home and did not remember the number. Some lawyers called up the office of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa to find out if there was a sanad issued in his name. “The Council informed that no person by his name was registered. We sensed something wrong and handed him over to Shivajinagar police,” he said.

According to him,Kshetrapale had allegedly duped clients of Rs 3.5 lakh. “His current client had submitted the complaint to Shivajinagar police stating that Kshetrapale had taken Rs 1.4 lakh as advocate fees from him,” Kajale-Patil said.

An FIR was lodged in the evening and Maya Bankar, police inspector (crime),Shivajinagar police is supervising the inquiry against him.

On April 24 this year,Kawachale was arrested for allegedly impersonating as a lawyer and duping a businessman to the tune of Rs 3.93 lakh in 2010 on the pretext of representing him in various cases at the district and sessions court.

Kawchale had also filed three PILs in Bombay High Court and was a defense lawyer in the Jyotikumari Choudhary rape-and-murder case, which was delayed because a new defence lawyer had to be appointed after he was arrested.

It was later learnt Kawachale faked his law degree and obtained his sanad on the basis of fake documents. The Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa de-registered Kawachale and the Bombay High Court recently directed the Council to consider filing a case against him.
