Colours of Tantra

Inspired by veteran painters like Velu Vishwanathan and J Swaminathan,artist Ramesh Thorat has been painting canvases with tantra themes since early childhood.

Inspired by veteran painters like Velu Vishwanathan and J Swaminathan,artist Ramesh Thorat has been painting canvases with tantra themes since early childhood. The 38-year-old plays with different colours,textures,compositions,geometric shapes and new techniques to capture the essence of tantra in his paintings,which are on display at Ark Art Gallery till September 30. “My works generally depict deeply rooted symbols and techniques of Tantra,” says Thorat. Some of the symbols include the triangle which symbolises Shiva,a mirror image of the same depicts Shiva and Parvati,whereas a U-shaped symbol denotes power,which is an attribute of a woman. His colour scheme includes earthy tones of brown,green,red and sepia. “My paintings depict energy,through which I endeavour to inspire people to keep hope in dark times,” explains the artist.
