A second year production engineering student of College of Engineering Pune (CoEP),Sangameshwar Jadhav,is reported to have committed suicide due to exam-related pressure on Tuesday afternoon. According to the college authorities,he was staying at the college hostel in Shivajinagar and hanged himself to death.
Hailing from Kandhar town,Nanded,Sangameshwar was considered to be a brilliant student by his batchmates. He taken a lateral entry to the second year after completing his diploma.
He reportedly was not prepared for Tuesdays mathematics examination. He decided not to skip the exam after his roommates advised against it. He left the hostel for the exam but returned back to his room and ended his life, said Sudhir Agashe, dean of student affairs at CoEP.
Roommates returning after the exam found that Sangameshwars room was locked from inside. There was no response to repeated calls from his roommates to open the door.
The hostel authorities along with the local police broke into the room where Sangameshwars body was found hanging. He had topped the list of diploma holders and was admitted to CoEP for direct second year admissions this academic year. He was a studious and hard-working student. It was never expected he would take such an extreme step, college authorities said.
The deceaseds cousin brother Ganesh Jadhav, who is based in Pune, said Sangameshwar was in a disturbed state of mind due to poor examination preparations. We never thought he would end his life. It is very tragic for our family, especially my uncle, who is a farmer. Sangameshwars two younger sisters are in deep shock, he said.
The autopsy of the deceased was on till evening at Sasoon hospital, after which the body was to be taken to his native place for final rites. Since 2011,CoEP has introduced revised syllabus for mathematics for students directly admitted to the second year owing to their relative weak foundation in the subject. Also,we have no failure criteria for slow-learners to ease out examination related pressure. It is painful that despite all this student centric measures,Sangameshwar succumbed to academic pressure, Agashe said.
