A 30-year-old man running a coaching centre for competitive exams was allegedly shot at four times by a 19-year-old assailant in Pune’s Indapur on Monday night in a fallout of local political rivalry. The police said the victim was critical but stable and that they arrested two suspects, including the assailant.

The shooting took place around 7 pm in front of the Indapur College of Arts, Science and Commerce. The victim has been identified as Rahul Chavan. The assailant has been identified as Abhijit Chormale and his accomplice as Prakash Shinde, 50.

“Initial probe suggests that Chavan and Chormale’s family has a past rivalry over local politics. In 2021, these two sides had registered cases against each other over a dispute during local elections. Probe suggests that the attempt to murder Chavan was a fallout of that dispute,” said Pankaj Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police, Pune Rural police.

Deshmukh added, “Chavan has named nine persons in the FIR. We have arrested two and are probing the role of others.”

An officer from Indapur police station said, “The CCTV footage from the location shows Chormale opening fire at Chavan from behind. Chavan sustained four bullet injuries, after which Chormale fled on his bike. Chavan was rushed to a local hospital, where he is being treated. His condition is critical but stable.”
