Warkaris who had fallen ill after eating stale food discharged

Three warkaris who were undergoing treatment and 82 warkaris who were kept under observation at Silver Jubilee Hospital in Baramati after they had consumed stale food were discharged on Monday. The three warkaris had complained of vomiting and were given IV saline drip.As many as 85 warkaris from dindi number 193 of Latur had consumed lapshi — a sweet made from wheat. Twenty eight persons fell ill while three had complained of vomiting and loose motions,said Dr N D Deshmukh,Pune district health officer. Food and Drug Administration authorities said some had eaten bhakri and thecha after a day’s fast,following which they showed symptoms of acidity and nausea. FDA officials are now investigating the matter and will submit a report soon.

NCDC proposes National Rabies Control Programme

Pune: The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC),Delhi,has proposed a National Rabies Control Programme including both human and animal components under the 12th Five Year Plan. As part of the programme,the strategy for prevention and control of human rabies will include training professionals in appropriate animal bite management.

The implementation of the cost-effective Intradermal Rabies Vaccination (IDRV) in major anti-rabies centres and strengthening surveillance will be the other measures. Mass vaccination of dogs,dog population management,ensuring availability of safe and effective anti-rabies vaccines are some of the measures that will be taken up to control rabies in dogs.At the 15th National Conference of Association for Prevention & Control of Rabies in India that concluded in Pune recently,Dr Pradip Awate,state Surveillance Officer,IDSP, said there is a need to strengthen the surveillance system to have a clear picture of rabies in the state.
