City school teacher selected for US space workshop

Kanchan Karandikar,a teacher of science and mathematics at Abhinav Marathi Vidyalaya,has been selected for a weeklong workshop to be held in the US by US Space and Rocket Centre.

Kanchan Karandikar,a teacher of science and mathematics at Abhinav Marathi Vidyalaya,has been selected for a weeklong workshop to be held in the US by US Space and Rocket Centre. She along with three other teachers from the city will be underoing the training between June 20 to 26. It is a rare occasion that a teacher from Marathi school has been selected for the programme.

Karandikar will be doing a programme called Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy in Huntsville town in the state of Alabama. The programme is for teachers of science and mathematics.

“It is basically aimed at providing innovating teaching aids to the teachers,” said Karandikar. “I had given online test in which they asked about what are the hurdles you come across while teaching science and mathematics and what are our expectations from training,” she added.

Karandikar has been teaching science and maths in Abhinav Marathi School for the last three years. She hails from Malvan in Konkan area and was a teacher there for few years. She then shifted to Dubai and was conducting classes for six years before coming to Pune.

This year 272 teachers from 19 countries will be participating in the programme. Honeywell US will bear the cost of living and travelling of the teachers.
