Childhood Capers

A twenty year old blowing up a huge portion of his salary to buy GI Joes...

From collecting GI Joes,to listening to bedtime stories these grown ups leave no stone unturned in revisiting their childhood

A twenty year old blowing up a huge portion of his salary to buy GI Joes,or a young working girl spending money to buy Barbie dolls might not exactly be the kind of vision that kids would have of grown ups. But given the quirky 21st century generation it is not very surprising to note the fact that young adults are fast rallying up on the home turf of school goers to give them a run for their toys and ways of living-literally.

Speaking about her quirky passions,Nikita Deshmukh,a software engineer says,“I remember telling my mother that I would blow up all my salaries buying Barbie dolls when I began working. And this was almost ten years back when she had once refused to buy me a very expensive Barbie doll. She had laughed it off back then saying that it was something that I would never do. Ironically now days she does make it a point to politely yell at me and tell me to stop buying them. As of late I have recently purchased a new Barbie, which has cost me a quite a lot. But then again I really think it’s worth it. More than that it’s nice to be able to unleash the child in you.”

Seconding that thought is Shaunak Thakkar, whose passion for collection cars has exceeded well into his college years,he says,“I own close to a 120 cars. And I have been collecting them ever since my childhood. I know most people find it a waste of time and money to indulge in such investments but for me it’s a way of life. Infact it reminds me of the times when I used to have a lot of fun collecting them trading them and just playing with them. One of the best cars in my collection is a monster truck which I got a couple of years back. And in the near future I would like to lay my hands on a Dodge Viper and a Shelby GT 500 Mustang. There are others too in the pipeline but lets save them for later.”

While the passion for collecting cars and toys might be an obsession with some youngsters for Rahul Sinha,a working profession has a quirky passion for hanging on to bed time stories. He says,“I have this bad habit of going and waking up my father in the wee hours of the morning just before I go off to sleep to tell me a bed time story. The story is the same every day. I usually come back home late in the night and before I sleep I go and wake my father and ask him to tell me a story. He usually mumbles his way through the story but I make it a point to hear the entire thing attentively. It could be anything,Hansel and Gretxel, Jack and the Beanstalk,or something as simple as the Three Little Pigs but I just have to hear it. My dad however might have a different story to tell.”

It might be difficult for both adults and children to comprehend the new race of Young Adults, but for youngsters like these-childhood is the new adulthood-seems to be the mantra of these fast changing times.
