Chain-snatching: Cops seek jewellers’ help

Failing to curb chain-snatching,the Pune police have now sought the help of jewellers in the city to get information they may have on any suspects who may try to sell the stolen jewellery.

Failing to curb chain-snatching,the Pune police have now sought the help of jewellers in the city to get information they may have on any suspects who may try to sell the stolen jewellery.

Meanwhile,days after the Pune police formed a special squad against chain-snatching crimes,they have started changed their modus operandi. It was usually observed that chain-snatchers use motorcycle as a getway vehicles after the crime. But in a recent incident,chain-snatchers used a four-wheeler to flee after committing the crime.

A woman,Deepali Tushar Savant,has lodged a complaint in the case at the Airport police station. A resident of Kapil Park in Talegaon Dabhade,Deepali had come to visit her sister-in-law’s house at Sanjay Park in Viman Nagar area. Around 2.30 pm on Thursday,Deepali was talking to her sister-in-law near Sanjay Park,when two unidentified men arrived in a four-wheeler (SUV)

One of them stepped out of the vehicle and snatched Deepali’s chain worth Rs 40,000. He then rushed back into the vehicle and the duo fled in their four-wheeler. Police inspector Ramesh Galande is investigating the case. This is the 21st chain- snatching incident in the last six days. Most of these cases remains unsolved.

In the view of increasing number of chain-snatching crimes,the Pune police had formed a special squad led by inspector Ram Jadhav of the crime branch to curb the problem.

On Friday,the crime branch issued a press release appealing jewellers to help police gather information on the criminals. Police said after stealing chains,the criminals are likely to approach jewellers to sell them.
