As the census drive for Pune district that was to conclude on June 15 was extended till June 25,the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will be able to submit the final figures only by the month-end while the final tally would be available by July 4.

Pune city and Mumbai have been given extensions so that a consolidated tally would be available. According to government officials, the requisite forms had to be re-applied to accommodate the increasing population. Since the additional forms came only on June 15,the process was delayed, they said.

The census drive for Pune district concludes on Friday. Chief census officer Chandrakant Dalvi said,“Pune rural and the Cantonment boards will submit their final data on Friday.”

The census drive had started on May 1,which comprised the National Housing Census and National Population Registry drive. Citizens had to fill up two questionnaires with 50 questions in the house-to-house survey conducted by enumerators. The data included names of family members, age, income, education, standard of living and property details. House-listing was the main focus.

This is the seventh population census to be undertaken and the district is expected to record a 25 per cent increase in population over the last census in 2001,when it recorded 72.67 lakh. This time, the figure is likely to cross 91.42 lakh. Nearly 17,643 persons were appointed as enumerators and each of them handled around 600-750 citizens. Further,2,736 supervisors and 352 master trainers were appointed in the district. The census was conducted in all 14 talukas,11 municipal councils, three Cantonment boards and in the PMC and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits. An in-charge officer has been appointed for each civic body. An assistance cell each has also been set up for the PMC and PCMC.

The entire population, including foreigners and floating population such as students and paying guests, was covered. If a person registers his/her information at another place, one entry was deleted and residents were requested to remain present at home during the drive and provide the information sought.

The data of every individual collected in the house-to-house drive will help the administration prepare a National Population Register (NPR) that will be used for the Unique Identification Number for each individual. Citizens will be required to fill a separate questionnaire for the NPR in a subsequent drive. Data collection for the house census and the NPR will be completed in a year. Those who do not provide the data will not be included in the NPR,said the officials.
