Campus chitchat : Robots Compete

The National Robotic Contest – Robocon 2012 - will be held from March 1 - 3 at the Boxing Arena of Shiv Chhatrapati Krida Sankul,Balewadi.

The National Robotic Contest – Robocon 2012 – will be held from March 1 – 3 at the Boxing Arena of Shiv Chhatrapati Krida Sankul,Balewadi. A total of 67 teams from across the country will participate in this event organised by Doordarshan in collaboration with Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT),Pune. Mahesh Gauder,a professor at MIT,says,”This event will give a platform to students to showcase their skills.” Anirudha Nalawade,a first-time participant from MIT,is very excited. “We have been preparing for this contest from December 2011. From team selection to strategising,the last few months have been devoted to this contest.” The winner of this national contest will represent India in the contest to be held in Hong Kong in August 2012. Last year,the event was held in Bangkok,Thailand,wherein 19 engineering colleges from 18 countries participated. In Hong Kong,students from the Asia-Pacific region will gather to direct robots to cross bridges and tunnels,land on the island,climb the Bun Tower,and so on. There will be other awards like the best idea,best design,best engineering,best first-timer award,best economical robot,best innovative design,fastest job completing robot,best manual operator and the like.

Quest for Peace

An inter-college conference on peace and its necessity in today’s world will be held at the Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth,Ramwadi,on March 2. Titled ‘Towards Peace: Dreams,Dialogue,Dynamics’,the conference is being organised by the various departments of Philosophy of city colleges. It will aim at bringing together various ideas on peace,sharing common concerns,and analysing responses and approaches towards it. The themes for the conference include peace and freedom,social issues and peace,justice,equality and peace,and ecology,nature and peace among others.

Flame of Change

Last week,the FLAME School of Communication concluded its ‘New Options for the World (NOW 2012)’ fest with a three-day seminar titled,’Is Indian Democracy Alive and Kicking?’. The speakers included media veterans,bureaucrat Arun Bhatia,jurist Aroona Nafde and political scientists Rajeshwari Deshpande and Ajit Abhyankar. The seminar was inaugurated by Indira Parikh,the founder-president of FLAME,and featured presentations on the role of media in democracy,intricacies of the relationship between Indian democracy,judiciary and legislature and politics and democracy.

Young Icon

Lakshya Bhatnagar from the International School of Business and Media,Viman Nagar,won the grand finale of the Uninor Uth Icon held at Ishanya Mall on Saturday. Bhatnagar will feature in the outdoor advertising campaign of the brand. Abhishek Palghane from G H Raisoni Polytechnic,Nagpur,was the first runner-up. The 10 finalists were scrutinised by Rajeev Sharma of Uninor Maharashtra,and actors Tusshar Kapoor and Kulraj Randhawa.

Celebrating Technology

Melange,the annual fest organised by VIT,Pune,saw a series of technical competitions including C-athlon,Byte-Code,Circuit Eye,Micromind,Dot-M apart from dance,quiz and gaming competitions. The instrumentation department introduced Innovation,an initiative to come up with unique technical ideas. Fifty different sensors that are used in instrumentation engineering were exhibited in Sensored. Workshops on ‘Make your own Mobile by Campus Components’,’Assembly and Disassembly of Automobiles’ and ‘Robotics’ were also held.
