Cameroonian Yanik Zomo (30) arrived in Pune on a student visa in 2005,set up base in the city and started a racket for providing fake papers to other foreign students seeking admission to city institutes.
Zomo, picked up by the foreigners registration branch of the Pune police, had set up a website,www.sconz.org,to run his racket. The police have also arrested his landlord in Magarpatta City for renting a flat to Zomo without informing the police.
Zomo studied BCA at a prominent city college. Even after his student visa expired in 2008,he remained in Pune illegally. He initially stayed at Sangvi but, with the police on his trail, shifted to Khadki,Bopodi and finally to Magarpatta City two weeks ago before he was arrested.
Landlord Parshuram Bhiku Magar (50) of Hadapsar has been booked under section 14 of Foreigners Act. He rented his flat to Zomo at Rs 10,000 a month, said police inspector Bhanunpratap Barge of the foreigners registration branch.
Zomo provided forged provisional admission letters and other documents to foreign students in the city. In his website Zomo mentioned his contact details saying he could provide visa documents and papers required for admission to college. He provided documents to at least 10 students, charging Rs 40,000 per student. He bought a car and lived a plush life, Barge said.
Deputy Commissioner (special branch) Ravindra Sengaonkar led the operation. Police have detained Zomo at their Shivajinagar headquarters and started the procedure of deporting him to Cameroon.
The Pune police have so far given leave-India notices to about 200 foreigners overstaying in the city. They found that some foreigners were not willing to go back to their countries and purposely committed crimes so that they could be arrested, get bail and stay on till the disposal of cases. The police have decided to blacklist overstaying foreigners and deport them home.
