A day after two Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) cadets Naresh Bansal,22,and Gautam Mishra,23,drowned in the college swimming pool,AFMC authorities stated the cause of death as asphyxia due to antemortem drowning (inability to breathe due to water entering lungs,before death).

An AFMC press release said that the bodies of the two cadets were handed over to relatives. Cadet Mishra was cremated in Pune and cadet Bansals body was flown to Punjab as per the wishes of his parents. The cadets of the 2007-12 batch drowned on June 18-19 midnight.

The release said that Anurag Gupta,a friend of the two cadets,had given a statement to police that they had consumed alcohol before entering the pool. It stated that the AFMC authorities conducting investigations have preserved the viscera for analysis.

After post-mortem,the bodies were handed over to relatives. Their friend has given a clear statement that they had consumed alcohol. To get it confirmed,the viscera has been preserved for chemical analysis, said Bajirao Mohite,senior police inspector with Wanavadi police station.

Wanavadi police were informed about the incident after the two were taken out of the pool.

Parents of the cadets arrived in Pune last evening and were handed over the bodies. Parents of cadet Bansal wanted to perform the last rites at their home-town in Punjab. Arrangements as per defence protocol were extended by AFMC to fly the body by civilian aircraft to the destination. Parents of cadet Mishra from Kanpur,UP,performed the last rites at Shankarseth Road Crematorium in the city on Monday afternoon.
