Work was paralaysed at the BSNL offices in the city as the employees went on a day-long strike in protest against the voluntary retirement scheme.
The protest was in response to the national strike call against a voluntary retirement plan, which the telecom company has forwarded to the department of telecommunication for implementation.
Secretrary of BSNL employees union,K Nalwade, said the employees observed the token strike from 6 am to 6 pm. The BSNL employees remain on duty round the clock, but it was decided that the strike will take place from 6 am to 6 pm so that night shift continue functioning normally.
Nalwade said the BSNL employees union has put forth 15 demands. The employees also protested against slackness of the company in making fresh investments. The new machinery is not bieng bought by the company which is hitting the growth prospects badly. Nalwade said.
Work suffered badly as even the customer service centres of the BSNL remained closed. All the employees below the rank of divisional engineers (DEs) had gone on strike. Only the officers below the rank of DEs went on strike while the Indian Telecom Service officers remained at work, said a senior official.
