German film maker Roland Reber on films, film festivals and his soon-to-be collaboration with Indian production houses

To him film festivals are party events unfortunately disturbed by films. Meet director Roland Reber who feels international film festivals only add to the commercial aspect of a film and as for the aesthetic part, according to Reber,it goes unnoticed. But then Reber also is man who remains hopeful. And hope to him comes from local film festivals where he states audiences watch films and not the celebrities around.

All praises for the film festivals in India he says,”Here people come for the love of films. Whatever festival I have attended here people ask deep thought provoking questions and you know just the right audience has received your film. Even though the audience does not hold a recognition as the audience in Cannes or some other big film festival but it is much more sensible and sensitive to films,”

In the city to screen his film,My Dream or Loneliness Never Walks Alone for PIFF,the director, who time and again has been noted for plundering the conscience of his audiences with thought provoking questions once more is set to trouble the dormant conscience of many, flashing in front of them the scenes with which they can easily relate too. His film My Dream or Loneliness Never Walks Alone,to be screened today,is the story of a man striving hard to break free from the perpetual repetitions of his life. “He is a man who frantically is looking for his own identity and is traumatised finding the answers of the who,why and what of his existence only to find in the end that we all are made by media. Media is what draws the line for us. They decide how are we suppose to look act and do things,” elaborates Reber.

The film very closely documents the journey the actor takes in the quest to find his own identity. Talking about the actors in the film,Reber says,”I hate directors who direct. When it comes to acting I see all the actors as artistes and I want to see the creativity in them so I give them their own space. With Seidenberg too I did the same thing.”

Maria Anna Eich, who plays the wife of the lead character in the film and is accompanying Reber for the trip, agrees,”Working with Reber you get your own space. He gives an artiste his or her own space to grow,” Absolutely interjects Reber “An artiste earns that space. A great film is great because of the team and not just the director.”

Reber’s trip to the country this time round is not only limited to screening his films. “I am here to find out what kind of co-productions are possible. You expect that in near future.”

Soon theIndo-German venture is expected to hit the film scene in both the countries. And with reber’s signature style of unsheathing the many layers of society to bring out the real picture films on issues like politics and prejudices are expected? “Well if you go to European countries the only picture of India they get is Tajmahal and snakes. Might sound funny but it’s true. I would like to show the real India to Europe first and then get back to my theme of prejudices on which I wanted to make films since long,” smiles he.

(Reber’s My Dream or Loneliness Never Walks Alone will be sreened at City Pride Kothrud at 11.15 am.)
