(Representational Photo) The Pune city police have arrested an autorickshaw driver who allegedly tried to rape a woman passenger, an IT professional, early on Tuesday while she was travelling home after work, officials said.
The police arrested the accused Aniket Nanasaheb Munjal, 24, a resident of Hadapsar, based on the complaint of the woman.
According to the police, the 29-year-old victim hired the autorickshaw around 3.30 am from her workplace. “But instead of taking her home, the driver allegedly took the woman to an isolated spot near the Kalepadal railway bridge. He stopped his vehicle and allegedly tried to rape the woman. She opposed his advances and managed to call the police control room. In no time, the police reached the spot and nabbed him after a chase,” said an officer.
The accused has been booked under sections 376 read with 511 (for rape attempt), 354, 354 b (using criminal force to disrobe woman), and 509 (insulting the modesty of woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), said a senior police inspector of the station where the woman filed the complaint. Further investigation is on.
