Armoured Corps Centre & School, Ahmednagar celebrate 78th Armour Day

This year, the Armour Day celebration is a curtain raiser for commemorating ‘100 Years of the Tank’, wherein on Septem-ber 15, 1916, tanks entered the battlefield in the Battle of Somme (France) for the first time.

The Armoured Corps Centre and School, Ahmednagar, celebrated the 78th Armour Day on May 1 to commemorate the commencement of mechanisation of Indian Cavalry regiments. On May 1, 1938, the Scinde Horse became the first regiment to introduce tanks, and the day has since been celebrated with much fanfare and pride.

The Armoured Corps Centre and School, a premier training establishment of the Indian Army, plays an important role in technical and tactical training of officers, JCOs and other ranks, both for the Indian Army and for friendly foreign countries.

The Armour Day celebrations were kickstarted by a variety of entertainment programmes on April 30. On May 1, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Armoured Corps Centre and School War Memorial. Senior serving officers and veterans paid their tributes to the bravehearts who laid down their lives in the service of the nation.

This was followed by an impressive passing out parade of young soldiers, trained at the Armoured Corps Centre. The parade was reviewed by Maj Gen Praveen Dixit, Commandant of the Armoured Corps Centre and School. In the evening a ‘Dare Devil Motorcycle Display’ was organised.
