A city-based NGO has taken the initiative to observe the Independence Day as anti-spitting day. The initiative has been taken by Foundation for Professional Governance (SPG) that will kickstart the nationwide campaign starting from Pune.
Over a period of three years, the group will take it to various other cities of the country. Several other groups in the city will also join the campaign. Girish Deshpande,SPG,has contacted the civic bodies, and hopes they will respond to their requests. We have tried to contact various offcials in the PMC,including Municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade and additional commissioner Umakant Dangat to join the campaign as well as take measures, like installing spittoons at public places, said Deshmukh.
Not only is spitting banned under law attracting a fine,it is one of the biggest reasons for spreading infectious diseases.
Deshpande later added that most paan shops in the city have their own spittoons and dustbins, but the civic body lack initiative. Anil Avachat,Muktangan Rehabilitation Centre, who is also participating in the campaign, feels that today spitting has become a disease in India. Right from the slum dweller to a Mercedes owner everyone spits on the roads and walls, said Avachat.
Kishori Gadre, director,Janwani, said During our several cleanliness drives,we have come across this problem and it adds to the image of Pune being a dirty city. So citizens groups should start such initiatives, said Gadre.
On August 15,the campaign will begin with a symbolic march in front of the passport office on Senapati Bapat Road and end at ICC Tech Tower. The march will be followed by flag hoisting and a few 60 second street plays by students of various colleges. A ten minute documentary film on the issue will be released by FPG which has comments from noted personalities like Kalyan Gangwal,Anil Awachat,Shriram Lagu,Baba Adhav and Avachat, who have worked with the most affected classes for the cause.
