Soon, all three defence services-Army,Navy and Air Force-will be represented at the National War Memorial,Southern Command. The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) is awaiting funds aggregating Rs 9.50 lakh to begin the development work at the memorial, entailing installation of models of a MiG-23 aircraft as also a ship to join the army tank already standing on its premises.

“It is only fair that all three defence services find a place. At present, there is only an army tank model. Work has begun on the MiG-23 and naval ship models and they will be installed as soon as possible,” PCB president Brig Rajbir Singh said on Thursday.

“We need funds to undertake such work and plan to invest around Rs 9.50 lakh,” he said on the sidelines of a special board meeting in which several issues, including remodelling and improvement of sewerage in the civil areas under the jurisdiction of the Cantonment. Board officials made a presentation in which the proposed plans for laying pipelines in cantonment areas was laid out in detail. “The project will require the cooperation of the Pune Municipal Corporation. We will schedule a meeting with the new commissioner Mahesh Zagade soon,” he said.

Singh announced the PCB was gearing up for the onset of the monsoon. “In February,53 buildings were identified as dangerous,as they are in need of urgent repair, and notices were issued to the landlords. I wish to make it clear that while a tenant can go ahead with minor repair work,it is the landlord’s responsibility to undertake major repairs, such as rebuilding – in which case it is mandatory to take the permission of the board, under the provisions of the Cantonment Act.”

The PCB would strive to ensure safety of structures,he said, adding that the board administration would consider evacuation of residents if “absolutely necessary.”

Encroaching upon government land was a serious issue and defaulters would face stringent action,Singh said. “The board will formulate a committee to specifically look into an alleged instance of encroachment on Shankarsheth Road, which has been brought to the board’s notice. It will submit a report in around 10 days and whoever is responsible will be taken to task,” he said
