‘Addicted’ to Enrique

The pre-show had DJ Sa and Nucleya,aka Udyan Sagar kick start the evening with energetic mixes of popular tracks such as My dream is to fly and Enrique’s chartbuster,Tonight. While it did build up the audience excitement,it only added to the anticipation for the main act. However when Iglesias did take to the stage in the predicted dark t-shirt,baseball cap and torn jeans,the entire crowd erupted simultaneously. Iglesias got straight down to business with the song Tonight,swiftly moved on to I like how it feels and Dirty Dancer,never once showing signs of exhaustion; constantly keeping the audience engaged,moving from one end of the stage to the other.

It was when he sang Rhythm Divine and Bailamos,that he picked up a phone from one of the spectators,clicked pictures of himself and threw the phone back into the crowds,eliciting a collective “Ooh!” from the thousands. After Bailamos,the concert shifted gears as Enrique asked the audience whether they’d like to join him on stage and the crowd answered with thundering screams. It was 18-year-old Sai Kumar,a student at Wadia College who won the lottery though. Even before Enrique could completely pull him up on to the stage,he began to dance and shout out to the crowds.

When Kumar mentioned that his favourite song was I like it,Enrique sang the track with him and then went on to sing Stand by me,a song he says was his favourite since the age of seven. His rendition of the classic romantic number had the audience waving their arms in time to the music,while others raised their phones to record the same. Following Be with you and I’m tired of being sorry,the artist and his band took a short break as the crowd chanted a request for Hero. And Enrique returned with just that. This time around however,he pulled a young woman onstage,he held her in his arms and serenaded her with romantic lyrics from the song. She was the object of every woman’s envy as he then went on to kiss her at the end of the song,as the lights dimmed.

However there was not much of a chance to complain as he quickly moved on to I like it again and then ended with a personal message to the country in his song,Tonight,singing,“Here’s the situation/Been to every nation/Nobody’s ever made me feel the way that you do/ Pune is my motivation/ Given my reputation/ Now please excuse me,I don’t mean to be rude….”,before disappearing into the night.
