Artist Chandramohan Kulkarni, who is having an exhibition till Aug 12,says his paintings are a depiction of the real world with shades of his imagination blended in
One can’t help but marvel at the free strokes of expression and the fluidity of character in his paintings. Chandramohan Kulkarni is an artist who can’t confine himself to any one medium, subject or form of art. And proofs of this fact are his paintings exhibited at the Art2Day Gallery till August 12.
Previously,Kulkarni has been lauded for his Bandwalla and Call of the Seas exhibitions. For Bandwalla,I captured the uniforms, torn at some places, and the mannerisms and professional life of bandwallas . In Call of the Seas,I made portraits of people who work at the sea shores. Similarly,in Painter, people will see the scratches, blotches and stains that are a part of a painter’s person while he’s working. Of course,it’s not completely realistic. I’ve gone beyond the real borders and stepped into my world of imagination too, he describes. Incidentally, when Kulkarni was but a little boy,he worked under some local painters. For me,they were the best artists in the world! Back then I was clueless about how vast the world of art is! he exclaims.
In this latest exhibition,Kulkarni has also included installations. That’s an art in itself. Whether it’s a ladder used by painters,a stained shirt or even an open paint can that has more life than a closed one, these help me express my perception, he says.
Kulkarni is also a voracious reader. Reading has enriched my knowledge and helped me better express my opinions, thoughts and feelings on canvas. I use whichever medium that best suits my purpose. A painting may demand oil paints, acrylic,or a mix of acrylic and oil pastels. Just like food is never enough for a man who eats everything, the mediums aren’t enough for my creative appetite! he smiles.
