In a world that thrives on images, movement and action, this is one art that remains both original and intense. For the lensman, the camera is like a little haven where all things bright and beautiful emerge. So right from capturing the little beads of perspiration on the forehead of the mechanic next door to the candid smile that the little girl passes as she learns to ride for the first time, life is full of images. For a camera junkie then, capturing these is the only way of seeing the world in its best form. Displaying this intense passion for photography, the Photographic Society of Pune (PSP) was formed in August 2001.

What started as an initiative to consciously cultivate photography as an art has today transformed into a group that has thrived on the need to document and capture human emotions and the environment. From seven members in 2001,the group,in its 10 years of existence, has in its kitty 125 members,13 exhibitions and plenty of awards and aficionados. And the widespread popularity of this art is judged by the broad age spectrum of members – from 17-year-olds to 72-year-olds!

Sunil Kapadia, president,PSP,shares,“When we started out, there was a lot that we wanted to achieve. We wanted to promote photography as a strong and creative medium of art. Today,PSP is not only about photography alone, but also a lot of related things.” The group not only has photo walks, but also workshops, outings, studio evenings, and guest lectures in its routine schedule. In fact, the last Thursday of every month is reserved for an in-house contest in order to keep the members involved.

The exhibitions that the organisation conducts are also admired. Says Shreeram Deshpande, who is the vice president and one of the founder members of PSP,“I have been involved with this group for the past 10 years. The yearly exhibition has been of a great help to all the members. It has given us a good opportunity to display our work.” The first exhibition conducted by PSP was in April 2002. Titled Lensmen Extraordinaire,it displayed the works of several eminent artists.

What also makes this group stand apart is its regular activities. Every second Sunday, the members go for an outing and facilitate good picture taking opportunities. Also, every first Thursday of the month has an educational lecture which covers topics right from apertures, lenses, compositions to filters and even the economics of photography. Plus, there are three major annual awards including the Photographer of the Year award. “What works for us is perhaps the kind of team work we have. Every member is passionate about photography and so the response we get is immense,” says Surendra Nawade, honorary secretary,PSP.
