The Pune district sessions court on Thursday awarded five-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) each to four persons in separate cases.

A man and his brother were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of five years for setting the latter’s wife ablaze.

In another case, the court awarded five years’ RI to two youths in their 20s for culpable homicide.

In the first case,Sanjay Jalinder Davari (31) and Sunil Jalinder Davri (30),both residents of Dapodi, were awarded five years’ RI and Rs 3,000 fine for setting Sanjay’s wife Kalavati afire.

Sanjay and Kalavati got married about 12 years ago and have a 11-year-old son. Following tensions in their married life,Kalavati along with their son left the house and was staying at her friend’s place in Khed.

She later filed a case at the Khed court claiming maintenance and withdrew the case later after Sanjay manhandled her. However, she filed the suit again after a few months. On November 2005,Sanjay and his brother Sunil went to Khed and beat up Kalavati when her friend was not at home. They then set her ablaze and fled. Kalavati’s friend took her to the hospital and a case was filed with the police.

In another incident,Baban Natha Mengale (22) and Kundalik Hiraman Mengale (25),both residents of Khed, were awarded five-year rigorous imprisonment and Rs-500 fine by additional sessions judge H S Mahajan. On July 21,2008,the duo in inebriated condition started abusing Chindhu Mengale and the three soon began a fight. The convicts beat Mengale till he collapsed. His son did not take him to the hospital as it was late in the night and instead took him home. Mengale died in sleep.
