A 25-YEAR-OLD Information Technology (IT) professional working for a multinational company in Pune was found brutally murdered, with wounds from sharp weapons, in Shindewadi area on the outskirts of Pune city. Pune Rural police are investigating the possible motive of a relationship-related dispute and have zeroed in some suspects.
Pune Rural police identified the deceased as Saurabh Swami Athawale (25), a native of Mohol taluka of Solapur district who lived in Mangdewadi area of Pune. Athawale worked as an IT professional for a Japanese engineering major, police said. An FIR was registered at Rajgad police station on Tuesday by Saurabh’s elder brother Sangram (28), who studies in Pune.
“A missing person’s case was registered at Bharati Vidyapeeth police station on August 18 evening after Saurabh could not be contacted or traced. On August 19 morning, we received information that a body had been found on a small unpaved road next to the hill in Shindewadi area along the road towards Old Katraj Tunnel. A team was sent to the spot. The body was identified to be that of Saurabh’s. Initial observations and autopsy revealed that the death occurred due to wounds inflicted by sharp weapons. A murder probe was subsequently launched,” said an officer from Rajgad police station.
A senior officer from Pune Rural police said, “We started our probe with initial clues obtained from CCTV footage, among others. Our investigation suggests the murder was a fallout of a relationship-related dispute. We have questioned some people and identified some suspects. All possible angles are being investigated.”
Police have invoked charges under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita provision 103(1) which pertains to murder.
