PIMPRI CHINCHWAD police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly raping and attempting to murder an 85-year-old woman by strangling on the staircase of a housing society in Mahalunge area. Police said that the woman is currently receiving treatment at a hospital and is said to be out of danger.
According to officials from Hinjewadi police, the incident took place around 7 pm on September 22 on the fifth and sixth floor staircase of a residential society in Mahalunge area. Police have arrested the suspect, who hails from Dharashiv district and works as an electrician and also does plumbing jobs.
“Probe suggests that the accused had done some electrical work in the same building in the past. On Sunday he had come to do some work, when he saw the victim standing outside her fifth floor flat. He attacked her, dragged her to the sixth floor where he allegedly raped her on the service stair case. He strangled her after which she fell unconscious. After this he fled from the building,” said an officer who is part of the probe.
“Meanwhile, the woman’s family members had started searching for her. They found her lying unresponsive on the staircase. They rushed her to a private hospital. In her statement to us she narrated the ordeal. We launched a search for the suspect. He was arrested from Sakhare Vasti area. On Tuesday, a court remanded him to police custody till Friday.” the officer added.
