The renovated Narayan Peth police chowky in the heart of the city was inaugurated by police naik Vidya Ahire in the presence of Minster of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe and Police Commissioner Meeran Borwankar on Sunday. The historic chowky was renovated after some portions were brought down for road-widening.
The chowky was built over a 100 years ago by the British to keep a tab on Lokmanya Tilaks activities and is considered a landmark.
Bagwe said all police chowkys need to be fully operational to tackle local disputes. Deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Dnyaneshwar Padtare said with addition of a floor to the chowky,the space available was now 549 sq ft as against 140 sq ft earlier.
MLAs Girish Bapat and Madhuri Misal,joint commissioner of police Ashok Dhiware and other senior officers were present on the occasion. The renovation work has been done through ward-level funds of Mukta Tilak. Bapat said,More than 90 per cent of chowkys in the city are not equipped as per police manual. He said it was crucial to strengthen chowkys for better rapport with the public. He spoke about his plan to connect all chowkys in his constituency through a computerised network.
