Yummy and not-so-yummy in my tummy

Quest asked students: What food do you love and what you don’t?

I hate rice; my mother insists that I should have it in some quantity as it’s good for health. I generally feel comfortable with two chappatis and sabji and that’s filling for the stomach as well.

Rice makes me lazy and the next thing that comes to my mind after having rice is a good sleep. But with exams ahead, how can you ever think of a good sleep or for that matter even a pinch of rice?

I love cakes, bananas, fruits and icecreams because they are too tasty to say no to them,or they are given to us very specially when my aunts or uncles come to our house.

My mother feels that they are not good for health. I asked her to name a healthy man who died eating chocolates. No answer. “Shut up and don’t answer back,” that’s the reply from her.

I wish our mothers were trained to eat chocolates as well. Why didn’t their teachers teach them that way,I wonder always.

But my father brings panipoori, bhel and other stuff that I like. Then it’s a party at home.

My mother tells me to eat all that is there on the plate before I put the plate to wash. I ask her why do you load kilos in my plate?

I love palak, bhendi and potatoes and she prepares dudhi, vangi and other bhaji which I hate.

Often when I go to a hotel, mother orders dosa or idlis, which is welcome, but why can’t she include pizza or burger in her order, too? No. They are bad for health, she says, and junk food.

I sometimes wonder why there is a gap in my and my mother’s thinking when it comes to food. She says,“My mother was very particular about food for it would affect your body systems. Pungent foods cause ulcers, cold foods make you sick, outside food will spoil your stomach and home-cooked food will keep you safe.”

To hell with this logic, eat what you love and love what you eat. That’s what my teacher says and I agree.

Food is medicine to our stomach which keeps on running tirelessly. I love some things and hate some, too. I love wada pav, pizzas, burgers, hot dogs, dosas, tandoori chiken. But your stomach feels heavy when you eat them. You cannot eat these items every day either, for that will damage your system.

I love palak paneer, baingan bhurta, aloo gobi and other Punjabi dishes. They are delicious.

I hate capsicum, bread and butter, lavki, arbi and so on. On the other hand, pav bhaji, kurkure and other snacls are tastier than these.

I come from a poor family. My parents are farmers and spend a lot of time on the farm to so that they can pay our school fees. Every day,my mother packs leftovers in my dabba for school. I don’t share my food with anybody and eat it myself. Sometimes, she gives me chapatis with lassoon chatni or bhakri with chatni. These are very tasty,so say my friends. My friends ask me what have I got for lunch. They love what I get every day. But they bring bread butter and jam, which I hate.

I love usal pav, vatana bhaji, khichdi and other dishes that we get outside our school. But I cannot buy them every day. My mother hardly gives me money for school. I save whatever I get to buy the food I like.

I love festivals and weddings, for we get to eat the food we love — puris, shrikhand, ladoo, khir and what not. I wish every day was a festival; what a wonderful time I would have.

no one can resist icecreams, toffees, cakes and pastries. No child will ever say no to these as they are they are wonderful substitute to their main food.

As children,we have the right to eat what we like and to like what we eat. But for our parents, these words don’t mean a thing. They are of the opinion that eating outside is dangerous and can make you ill.

It seems as if as children, they never ate outside anywhere. It’s all humbug you see. They must have enjoyed the treats outside rather than what was cooked at their homes.

My favorite food is scrambled eggs and yoghurt. These are my so called breakfast. Top that with apple or pineapple juice and they work wonders, keep me full till noon.

I saw a cartoon character eat spinach. From then,I also started eating spinach and it tasted good, too.

Sausages, burgers, pizzas are also welcome sometimes if there is a treat in the family. Festivals give us khir, ladoo, karanja and lots of sweets and I love them too.

I hate leftovers. My mother heats them and gives them to me the next day. Why should they be in my tiffin box? I enjoy fresh food the most. Hot,spicy and tasty rather than cold, thawed and inedible.

I love bhajia, wada, samosa and all the yummy breakfast items you get at the shop near my house. I love kulfi, golas and sarbat from the nearby sarbat walla. I like kokum sarbat, shikanji ras, anardana ras and pineapple juice. I love dosas with coconut chutney and chutney powder.

My mother is a wonderful cook and she makes delicious dum aloo and palak sabji and baingan bharta. My favourite vegetable is cabbage and I love cabbage soup; it is indeed delicious.

I hate pizza, burger and junk food in packets at my school canteen. I carry my tiffin box to school every day. Other children know about my mother’s cooking and wait for lunch so they can raid my lunch box every day.

I hate dahi. My mother tries to break this habit of mine by giving me buttermilk instead, which I do like sometimes.

I don’t eat out that often,so when I do get a yummy goodness,it is a treat for me. French fries, burgers and milkshakes and even delectable vegetable sandwiches. I could eat these daily and be perfectly happy.

I love eating at fastfood restaurants. I love French fries the most. I love veggie burger. It is always tasty, with tomato ketchup,it tastes better. Cheese makes it even better. It is so much better having burgers from restaurants when you don’t have to make something at home.

I love the bread used in veggie sandwiches. All those veggies piled high with special sauces. I love veggie patty thanks to pickles and tomatoes.

I hate dosas, idlis and wadas as I am a south Indian and they are an integral part of our breakfast.

n Prakriti Iyer,Sri Ma Vidyalaya,Thane

Dal khichdi, sabudana khichdi are some of my favourites as they are often given during to me when my mother fasts.

I love eating junk food like kurkure,French fries, chips and wafers, specially on my friends and my birthday.

Watermelon is my favourite fruit and so are muskmelons and papayas. Bananas are not so good but keep my digestion intact.

I do not like chicken and non vegetarian items. I am strictly vegetarian. But eggs form a part of my breakfast. I love puris, aloo sabzi and parathas. Eating parathas with dahi is a delight .

Pav bhaji is one dish to enjoy on weekends. This way,my mother does not have to cook anything on Sunday night.

I love aloo chat and panipuri, which are available near our house as well as icecream.

I hate soyabeans and baingan sabji. I love spinach and beetroot and enjoy rasam and sambhar that my mother often makes.
