(Image: @mieknathshinde)On Thursday, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that work on the Mumbai Central Park, slated to span 300 acres, is expected to commence soon with a detailed project report (DPR) already prepared. Shinde was speaking during the Swachhta Hi Seva drive, which kicked off September 17 and is scheduled to continue until October 2.
Apart from Shinde, other participants of the Swachhata Utsav drive, which is a part of the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, were state cabinet minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha and senior officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) including municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.

During the campaign, Shinde said a target for cleanliness was set across 19,940 areas where the Urban Development department identified solid waste being dumped. As many as 6,317 programmes on sanitation will be organised across the state. Shinde said in a bid to honour the best performing civic volunteers and civic bodies, a Swachhata Kamgar Samman will also be carried out under the campaign.
Shinde highlighted the impact of the deep cleaning campaign, which had been launched amid rising air pollution concerns.
Shinde also spoke about BMC’s efforts to conserve the green cover. He said the Central Park will include land from Mahalaxmi Race Course as well as open spaces from the reclaimed Coastal Road.
