Will appoint protection officers in each taluka in 6 months: State Govt

Government could seek help from TISS to prepare the curriculum for imparting the training.

The state government told the Bombay High Court Friday that it would take six months to complete the process of appointing one protection officer each for all 358 talukas in the state under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (DV Act).

“Protection officers play an important role in the implementation of the DV Act. The government should take steps to ensure imparting comprehensive training to full-time protection officers,” the HC said, adding that the government could seek the help of reputed institutes like Tata Institute of Social Sciences to prepare the curriculum for imparting the training.

The court was hearing a PIL filed by activist Rajendra Anbhule, which siad that the DV Act came into effect in 2005, but the state was yet to implement its provisions, especially relating to appointment of protection officers.
The next hearing in the case is due on February 23.
