WR officials said that frequent and surprise checks will continue, especially on high-revenue suburban routes and AC services. (File Photo)Through its ticket checking drives held from April to December 2025, Western Railway (WR) collected Rs 155.46 crore in penalty — 49 per cent increase over the corresponding period in 2024 when it collected Rs 104.34 crore, according to an official press release issued Monday.
“These results reflect Western Railway’s sustained efforts to curb ticketless travel and ensure a safer and more comfortable journey for bona fide passengers,” said Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway.
Of the total fine amount recovered in 2025, Rs 41.26 crore came from the Mumbai suburban section, underscoring the scale of ticketless travel in the city’s local train system. The railway administration said that sustained, surprise ticket checking drives were conducted across suburban services, Mail/Express trains, passenger services, and holiday special trains, under the supervision of senior commercial officers.
The impact of these drives was particularly visible in December 2025, when WR recovered Rs 15.54 crore by detecting 2.51 lakh ticketless and irregular passengers, including cases of unbooked luggage. This represented a 42 per cent rise compared to December 2024.
A major focus area for WR in 2025 was AC suburban local trains and WR penalised nearly 91,000 unauthorised passengers, recovering Rs 2.97 crore — 97 per cent increase over the previous year, when fines from AC locals stood at Rs 1.51 crore.
WR officials said that frequent and surprise checks will continue, especially on high-revenue suburban routes and AC services. The railway administration has also appealed to commuters to travel only with proper and valid tickets.
