The state on Friday set about implementing the reservation policy it had finalised a day earlier, issuing a government resolution and starting an update of the online admission process to accommodate a 90 per cent quota in junior colleges for students from the state board.

The Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd is making the necessary changes in the programming of the software on fyjc.org.in/mumbai,the website for online admission to junior colleges, said V Wankhede, deputy director of education,Mumbai.

“Work has already begun and it will be ready by the time admission begins,” he said. Several students are practising on the website everyday, filling up mock online forms.

The government resolution says the decision to reserve seats was taken after a study had found that state board students had been at a disadvantage so far. The study took into account the number of schools of the SSC,ICSE,CBSE and other boards, the number of students passing from these boards every year, the marks they score, seats available in standards XI and XII in ICSE,CBSE,IB (International Baccalaureate) schools and other boards.

The resolution noted that the pattern, subjects, evaluation method and syllabus for the exam from the various boards — ICSE,CBSE,SSC(state board) and others — are different and hence the marks that these students score also differ.

“To ensure parity among students of all boards, the state government had introduced the percentile method last year,” it said. However,a PIL was filed against the method in the Bombay High Court and it was subsequently quashed.

“Taking into consideration students of other boards and the instructions given by the HC during the percentile ruling, and to help provide equality of opportunity to everybody without comprising on merit, the state government has decided on the 90 per cent quota reservation for SSC students and 10 per cent reservation for students of other boards from the academic year of 2009-10,” the resolution said.

All other reservations will remain the same,it said.
