Journalist Jigna Vora,an accused in the murder of Mid-Day journalist J Dey in June, moved an application before the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court on Tuesday seeking an in-camera hearing in the case. Vora is currently in judicial custody.
Voras lawyer Jayesh Vithlani moved an application, claiming the media was reporting contradictory stories leading to her character assassination. The application also seeks a gag on such reporting, with an additional plea that journalists who have been reporting on the investigation by attributing their reports to their sources should disclose their names.
According to the application,a police officer was intentionally divulging information against Vora and it could hamper her case. The application will be heard on December 20,when Vora will be produced before the court for extension of her custody.
Except for Vora, the police on December 4,filed a chargesheet against 10 of the 11 arrested accused, and booked them under several sections of MCOCA and IPC for murder and conspiracy.
Vora, who has spent nearly 15 days in police custody, was remanded in judicial custody on the last date of hearing, after the prosecution did not press for her custody. The police have so far seized seven mobile phones along with her laptop and office desktop.
Vora was arrested for allegedly abetting Deys murder. She has been accused of passing on the licence plate number of Deys motorcycle and his office and home address to fugitive gangster Chhota Rajan, who allegedly ordered the murder. She has maintained that she is innocent and her newspaper that it stands by her.
According to the Crime Branch,Vora allegedly took active part in the conspiracy.
Dey was shot allegedly on the orders of Rajan, who is said to have given Rs 5 lakh to the accused for the contract killing that took place in suburban Powai on June 11.
