A unified ticketing system app called ‘Mitra’ will be launched in Mumbai soon, which will help people book train, BEST, Metro and other services from one platform.

Mumbai is home to over 80 lakh daily local train commuters and 32 lakh BEST bus passengers, with many others relying on Metro, taxis, and app-based cab services for their daily commute. To bring about a change in urban mobility and ensure seamless multi-modal travel, a unified ticketing system will soon be launched for all modes of transport in Mumbai.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, held a detailed discussion with the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding this, its office informed on Saturday. Vaishnaw was in Mumbai on Saturday to inspect the progress of the bullet train project.

During the meeting, Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of the Open Network for Digital Commerce in Commuter Convenience (ONDCC) platform, an innovative initiative modeled after NPCI, which will serve as a one-stop urban mobility payment gateway. This system will allow commuters to purchase tickets for local trains, BEST buses, Metro rail, and other transport modes through a single platform, eliminating the need for multiple tickets.

Vaishnaw and Fadnavis discussed the roadmap for this initiative, focusing on collaboration among stakeholders by ensuring seamless integration of Indian Railways, Mumbai Metro (MMRDA), BEST buses (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation), app-based cab services, and state-run transport buses, technical development by establishing an inter-operable digital ticketing system to allow single-click payments and multi-modal journey planning, streamlining processes to achieve a phased rollout of the unified ticketing system at the earliest and ensuring ease of use, efficiency, and reliability for nearly 1.2 crore daily commuters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The unified ticketing system app ‘Mitra’ aspires to transform the current fragmented mobility landscape in Mumbai by enabling users to travel across all modes of transport in a single transaction. Through Mitra, users can book all modes of transport, including first and last mile travel, in one app, simplifying and streamlining the entire urban mobility experience for Mumbaikars. This initiative will also encourage the use of public transport, reduce dependence on private vehicles, and contribute to a sustainable urban transport ecosystem.
